THE PROCESS

Wedding Guest Portraits are such a fun addition to your wedding day and are a keepsake for your guests, as well as entertainment. You can expect around 30 guest portraits to be completed during your wedding for guests to take home and the rest will be mailed to the bride and groom for them to distribute to their guests.

You can book Jillian or Anna as your lead painter for guest portraits. We will each come with one assistant and arrive before the ceremony to get set up in order to begin painting guest portraits at the start of cocktail hour and into the reception. We will need a 6’ table, linen, and two chairs. The venue can typically provide this, and we have a white linen if needed. We can move the table from cocktail hour to reception, but have also done several weddings where one or both tables are already set up by the wedding planner/venue for a seamless transition. Depending on the venue, sometimes it works to have the same set up the entire duration of the wedding if the cocktail hour and reception are in the same general area.

When cocktail hour starts, my assistant will begin taking photos of guests who come to the table and we will work through painting as many photos as possible during the contracted 5 hours. Your wedding guests will be amazed and excited about their custom portrait and some will get to take them home that evening! I will have a framed sign on my table that says, “Live Watercolor Guest Portraits,” and another framed sign detailing the process for your guests. It can be helpful to consider where people will be congregating for my table placement. Typically, most guests will have their photo taken during cocktail hour and check back in with me during the reception time.

On average, we take about 5 minutes to draw and paint each person, 10 minutes for two people (this time is industry standard). We can paint around 6 couples per hour. Each portrait is ink and watercolor paint on a 5x7” piece of watercolor paper, and wrapped in a plastic sleeve for safe keeping as the guests bring them home. The paintings will be ready for framing and displaying in your guests’ homes to remember your wedding day by.

Any remaining photos (this will be the majority of the photos since I paint an average of 6 couples per hour on site) that have not been painted by the end of my contracted time will be completed and mailed to the bride and groom following the wedding day. I will send an email with the matching guest photographs to the couple as well so that they can match the guest portraits to the appropriate guests.
